Our stories, our strengths: Special education for Minnesota American Indian families
This workshop will be hybrid Zoom/in-person.
In-person location:
Minneapolis American Indian Center
Grandparents Conference Room
1530 East Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55404
American Indian families and caregivers are invited to join a community story circle that will explore how the stories we hear about schools, families, and special education shape what we expect and how we show up for our children. Through a short scenario and guided listening, participants will experience how a single story can quietly influence assumptions about families, disability, and learning. Together, we’ll notice what feels familiar, what feels uncomfortable, and what questions are left unanswered. This is not a lecture and there are no “right” answers. It’s a shared space to listen, reflect, and consider how our own stories—and the stories told about our children—affect relationships between families, educators, and schools. Participants will leave with questions to carry with them into everyday moments like Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, classroom conversations, and communicating our children’s strengths and needs.
If an ASL interpreter is required, please notify workshops@pacer.org at least 48 hours prior to the workshop. We will do our best to accommodate your request.
